Day 8 Muyuna

The rain had persisted through out the night resulting in a limited number of activities that we could do and after a group discussion we decided to go back to the Amazon to look for the Pink Dolphin.  Again being on the water was much more enjoyable than the jungle.  As we cruised down the tributary it was obvious that there was more water but was there enough to get over the shallow entrance to the Amazon, we would soon find out.

The boatman gunned the engine and we slid over the shallow water feeling the bottom scrape on the mud but the most important thing was we did not get stuck.  Once in the Amazon or to be more specific a  smaller channel we easily saw 2 grey dolphins that were making there way upstream and were not hanging around 2 jumps and they were out of sight as we were going in the opposite direction.

As we rounded the corner of the island into the main channel we found a family or 2 adults and 2 young playing.  To us it seemed like they were passing a branch between them but they were certainly playing with some sort of stick.  After a while they must have sensed our presence letting the stick float on the surface as though it had served its purpose and now it was time to frustrate the tourists.  The ide they would surface at one point and whilst we were waiting for them to surface in that area they would surface in an area we were not watching so trying to get pictures was a challenge but we were not going to be beaten and managed a few before it was time to return to the lodge.

After lunch we would be going to the local village to see how they lived.  I was reluctant as I knew we would not see their culture as it should be but corrupted by colonial influence.  I must admit it was interesting to see how contented they were with their lives but you could see the western influence.  They were kind and offered us water melon as well as a chance to go to the bar.  As one would expect there were local products on sale but they were not pushy about it.

We also saw the local jail –m not up to western standards but a most definite deterrent, more so than those in the UK as this was built on a ant hill and the punishment was to endure these ants for however many hours the punishment was for.  Our guide had pointed out that it had only been used once in the last 10 years .

No sooner had we returned to the lodge that the rains returned resulting in no night activity.
